Cashew Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile by-product obtained from the Cashew Processing Plant. The Cashew Shell is the outer shell of the Cashew, which is part of the Cashew Fruit along with the Cashew Apple. This shell contains a viscous liquid, which is released when steaming raw cashews. This cashew nut liquid is used to produce phenol after undergoing decarbylation.

Cardanol is a natural phenol obtained from anacardic acid, the main component of refined cashew nut shell oil (Refined CNSL) and is a naturally derived product that can be substituted for phenol, an oil derived product.
